Cool Climate Red from the Dolomites

Egger Ramer St Magdalener

Gambero Rosso: "The Santa Magdalener Reisegger was one of the most interesting wines tasted this year...generous, ripe aromas, where fruit finds support from the spicy overtones...the plush palate gracefully unfolds."

This week’s featured wine comes from the stunningly picturesque region of Alto Adige. No other Italian wine region extends further north. The area is blanketed by alpine valleys where vines grow in the shadow of the majestic Dolomites, and is widely considered to be home to some of the most breathtaking vineyards in the world.

The combination of the mountainous terroir and cool climate here yields some of the best white wines in Italy, including Pinot Grigio, Gewurtztraminer, Pinot Bianco and even sparkling wines. Cool climate reds also excel, made from both international varieties as well as native stars like Lagrein, Schiava, and Teroldego.

Nestled in the alpine town of Bolzano, Egger Ramer Winery is an artisan label that specializes in the production of native varietals including Lagrein and Schiava Gentile, the two grapes featured in the classic regional blend known as ‘St Magdalener’. The 2021 Egger Ramer Reisegger St. Magdalener Classico is an approachable style with pretty violet notes that always appeals to enthusiasts of European Pinot Noir and Grenache. The bright red fruit and candied aromatics of the Schiava balance brilliantly with the darker, more intense character of Lagrein.

The fruit for the 2021 Egger Ramer 'Reisegger St. Magdalener' Classico DOC comes from vines up to 50 years old, planted in the sandy, loamy soils of Bolzano. It is ruby red in the glass, with notes of violets, almonds, red berries and cherries on both the nose and the palate. This is a light to medium-bodied wine with hints of coffee and spice on the finish. Drinking well now, or can be cellared up to 5 years. A perfect partner for smoked meats, pizza or pasta, but also light enough to pair with white meats and cheeses.
