2018 Tertini Tasmanian Chardonnay

Demand for Tasmania’s pristine cool climate wine grapes continues to outstrip supply, especially as its wine garners significant international recognition. Tasmania made history in 2020 when Tolpuddle’s Chardonnay bested wines from 53 countries to win “World’s Best White Wine” in the International Wine Challenge. Earlier this year, it was named “White Wine of the Year” by Decanter magazine, sitting alongside other top-tier winners, Louis Roederer Cristal and Bolgheri's iconic Ornellaia.

Far cooler than anywhere else in Australia, Tasmania is a wonderfully hospitable environment for varietals like Chardonnay, Riesling and Pinot Noir. 47% of hectares currently under vine are dedicated to Pinot Noir, followed by Chardonnay at 25%, with both of these components also used in the production of elite sparkling wines.

Tertini is a family-owned winery with a reputation built on crafting small-batch wines that are also reflective of their terroir. Tertini believes the best wines are made in the vineyard and practice minimal intervention in the winery, allowing their wines to wholly express both the grape varietal and a distinct sense of place. The fruit for Tertini's Tasmanian Chardonnay comes from the rich, ancient soils of the Coal River Valley, just north of Hobart. With long, sun-filled days, low rainfall and cool breezes from the Tasman Sea, Tertini's Marengo Farm provides ideal growing conditions for premium cool climate wines.

Naturally fermented and matured on lees for 10 months before bottling, the 2018 Chardonnay is a delicate balance of citrus flavour, subtle toastiness and crisp acidity. Made without malolactic fermentation or battonage, this is a modern style of Chardonnay, with a rounded texture from time in French oak. An excellent match for grilled or roast chicken, vegetarian pastas with cream sauces or seafood.
