Enticing Chardonnay from Salento, Puglia

Feudi di Guagnano Dieci Anni Chardonnay Puglia

Blessed with almost 300 days of sunshine a year, it is no wonder that Puglia in Italy’s south is one of the country’s most productive agricultural regions. Fertile soils and steady breezes from the three sides of the peninsula ensure a lengthy and consistent growing season.

For many decades, grape growers sold their wares to wine producers in other parts of the country, to add palate weight to less robust crops. Luckily in the 1990’s, the success and accolades being afforded to warmer climate New World wines breathed new life and inspiration into the wine industry in this sundrenched region. Here in the agricultural heartland, a new generation of winemakers set about crafting artisan wines to rival those of Italy’s more celebrated regions.

Several DOC and DOCG's have since been established, and Pugliese wines are now commonly seen winning national and international awards. Whites here are only about 20% of the region's production, but continue to grow in significance.

Feudi di Guagnano have established an impressive reputation in the new era of Pugliese wine. In 2002, siblings Gianvito, Carlo and Franco made a commitment to revive their grandparents' vineyard from 80 years ago and are now producing a gold class standard of Salento's famous reds (Negroamaro and Primitivo), rosés and whites.

Handpicked and matured in French oak for 6 months, the Dieci Anni Chardonnay is straw-coloured in the glass, with golden reflections. Hints of jasmine, and spice on the nose lead to yellow peaches, herbs and butter on the palate. A brilliant match for fish, shellfish and poultry.
