Superlative Pinot Grigio from Italy's Northeast

2021 Guerra Albano Pinot Grigio Friuli Colli Orientali DOC

Italy’s best-known white wine grape is riding a wave of popularity around the globe in recent years. Here in Australia, Pinot Grigio has made a significant dent in the market for aromatic whites, displacing Sauvignon Blanc as the “go to” dry white style for many.  The clean, fresh and aromatic qualities are inherently appealing, especially for those who prefer aromatic whites to Chardonnay.

While there’s plenty of choices available, the highest quality Pinot Grigio is harder to find. Superior Pinot Grigio can be found in a few locations in Italy, including Friuli and Alto Adige. Friuli Colli Orientali is a particularly esteemed subregion of Friuli, approaching the Slovenian border. The terroir here can produce Pinot Grigio with impressive zestiness, fruit character and scents of spring blossoms. The influence of the Adriatic and the cool temperatures of the Alps ensure enough acidity to produce lively, enticing wine. The soil here, made up of marl and sandstone, also gives the wines a distinct minerality with a touch of salinity as well.

The Restaurant Pendolino’s has worked with premium Pinot Grigio producer, Guerra Albano, for almost a decade. Current winemaker, Dario Guerra is known for his minimalist approach, allowing the wines to express the superior terroir here, and selects fruit for this wine from vines ranging in age from 15 to 35 years old.

Starting out the colour of straw, this wine will turn into a deep yellow colour as it matures. The nose is floral and fruity with hints of banana and white peach characters. On the palate, it is dry, soft and textured, with a uniquely creamy lingering finish. Premium Pinot Grigio is highly versatile - try it with fresh seafood, antipasti, vegetarian casseroles or your best roasted poultry.
