Ultra Rare Collector's Red from Friuli
2015 Guerra Albano Matteo I° Pignolo
In the 15th century, when rent payments in northeastern Italy were made in wine, three denominations were recorded: white wine, red wine and Pignolo. Today, Pignolo is once again considered to be the noblest of all the Friulian red grapes – structured, full-bodied and highly tannic, with an intense bouquet and incredible tertiary characters when patience allows enough time for it to develop in bottle. As soon as its signature tannins soften, Pignolo becomes a silky, multi-layered wine capable of drawing comparisons to Barolo or Syrah from the Northern Rhone.
We invite you to experience this ultra-rare varietal, appropriately aged for optimum enjoyment. The 2015 Guerra Albano Matteo I° Pignolo is deep red in the glass, with garnet hues. Aromas of plum, liquorice, blackberry and spice on the nose, with a velvety, full, round texture. The Matteo I° spends two years in barrel before subsequent aging in bottle. This wine will continue to drink at its peak from now until at least 2030. A fantastic match for grilled meat, lasagne or fillet of beef with Porcini mushrooms.
