Often called the “Queen” to Barolo’s “King”, Barbaresco is grown in the hills just north-east of Alba in Piedmont’s Langhe. It’s made entirely from Nebbiolo, and growing so close to the Tanaro River gives it a little more elegance and approachability than its famous neighbour. Fabio Oberto’s 2022 Barbaresco has the classic Nebbiolo character: a pale garnet colour, perfumed aromas of red cherry, rose petal and dried herbs, and a firm, savoury palate with fine tannins and a long finish. It’s made to pair with food, especially slow-cooked meats, mushroom risotto, truffle pasta or aged cheeses.
